Western Australian stallions will blow away the cobwebs in our breeding barns when the stud season commences this Saturday.

There’s no Blackfriars, no Trade Fair and we’ve also farewelled old-timer Kendel Star since last year. Studmasters around the State are looking long-term to break the Blackfriars monopoly and the latest newcomer to join our stallion ranks is Mungrup Stud’s North American import A Lot (USA).

Champion Mungrup sire Oratorio (Aus) begins his 13th book on Saturday and stud manager Ann Croucher reports A Lot is also taking a very keen interest in nearby mares. He arrived in the Great Southern earlier this month and is priced to cover his first book at a $5,500 service fee.

“He travelled well and is letting down into a striking stallion,” Croucher said. “He’s a sensible and kind horse and is great to handle.”

A Lot is by Champion USA sire and sire of sires Tapit and he won black-type in the LR Paradise Creek Stakes (1400m) and LR Elusive Quality Stakes (1400m) at Belmont Park in New York. He clocked a stunning 1:19.23s on turf in the latter to create a new USA record over 1400m.

“He has real sense of Tapit about him…good size and scope,” Croucher continued. “We are putting some of our more compact mares to him and that will add some size and class.”

Oratorio and Playing God ($11,000) head the Mungrup roster alongside A Lot and I’m All The Talk ($5,500). All fees (inc GST).
