Along came Anaconda Jones

Brazen Beau gelding Anaconda Jones had shown ample speed when placed behind Striking Alibi (Hanseatic) on debut at Ascot last month and was all the better for the experience in the Unite Resourcing Maiden (1000m) back there on Wednesday.

Anaconda Jones led again and wasn’t for catching second time out at the midweek meeting.  He was challenged turning for home by She’s No No (Awesome Rock) and London Rose (Splintex) but let down like a horse going places to score by over a length from odds-on favourite Barron Bill (Shalaa).

“He’s a serious horse,” part-owner and trainer Steve Wolfe predicted.  “I rushed him for that first start.  He was only 80% fit but we were going to run him in the Karrakatta Plate.  That was the wrong races for him but were confidant today and he had them off the bridle from the start.  Thanks to the team at home and Kerrie Pascoe who has been riding him fast work.”

Wolfe had been holidaying in Hong Kong with his wife Maureen and will give Anaconda Jones one more start before a winter spell.  He was purchased for $60,000 at the 2025 Perth Magic Millions by Commercial Bloodstock agent Noel Carter and is bred for speed on the top and bottom-half of his pedigree.

Darley Stud’s Group 1 VRC Newmarket Hcp (1200m) winner Brazen Beau (I Am Invincible) sired him from Vivaro (Exceed And Excel) who was a 1000m winner at Moonee Valley.

“He was a lot sharper today and you never give away a head start,” stable jockey Shaun McGruddy reported.  “He relaxed much better than his first start when he went hard throughout and I knew he would have a nice kick in the straight.”

Westbury Park studmaster Phil Ibbotson purchased his dam Vivaro for $160,000 from Godolphin at the 2021 Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale on the Gold Coast when she was carrying Albany winner Jellybean Jones (Frosted)

Her second foal Vivarini (Toronado) was placed at Werribee and Sandown Lakeside at her only starts during an initial prep for WA expat trainer Lindsey Smith.

After Anaconda Jones, she delivered a fourth and final foal by Brazen Beau and he was also targeted by Carter for $50,000 at this year’s Perth Magic Millions in February.
