Amelia Park bred filly Farmelia was a class above older maidens on debut for trainer Mitch Freedman in the Sportsbet Plate (1000m) at Caulfield on Wednesday.
Farmelia (2f Farnan – Amelia’s La Bout by Hinchinbrook) settled in the back-half of the field for Dean Yendall before asserting her superiority in the straight. She came off the back of Pump The Pedals (Pariah) and then worked through the pack to reel in front-runner Tennessee Spirit (Capitalist) for a professional win at the first time of asking.
“I don’t test them too early and she’s open to plenty of improvement,” Freedman revealed. “We don’t have end goals with them when they’re at this age, and she kept putting her hand up and for that reason she was allowed to get to the races.
“She handles soft ground and there’s plenty of good two-year-old races coming up.”
Farmelia was bred by Amelia Park owner Peter Walsh using immediate stud success Farnan (Not A Single Doubt) in his second-season at Kia Ora Stud. He kept a share after selling her to Freedman for $140,000 through Segenhoe Stud (as agent) at the 2025 Inglis Premier Yearling Sale.
Walsh had purchased her dam Amelia’s la Bout for $280,000 at the 2017 Inglis Easter Yearling Sale. She was a brilliant debut winner at Ascot but a fetlock injury curtailed her career after that one start.
Amelia’s la Bout was bred by Keith Biggs and her dam Dance With Zeel (Dehere) is an unraced sister to former WA sire Natural Blitz (Dehere) who won five Group 2 races along the eastern seaboard before retiring to stand at Mogumber Park in WA.
