Ripper Rupert was a given a perfect rails-hugging ride by Chris Parnham to give trainer Luke Fernie a well-deserved victory in the Swan Draught Hcp (1100m) at Bunbury on Thursday.
Fernie stands his sire Winning Rupert (Written Tycoon) at Geisel Park and prepares the promising 3yo for a Ladies Syndicate managed by his sister Jemma. He had won a Kalgoorlie maiden earlier this season and put the Bunbury race to bed with a brilliant turn of foot coming off the corner
Ripper Rupert fine-tuned his first-up prep with a Belmont barrier trial win on December 8. So did Mitch Pateman’s Winning Rupert 3yo Written Words ahead of his return at Ascot on Wednesday.
Fernie purchased Winning Rupert as a 10 year-old stallion in March 2024 in partnership with stable client Kim Doak and former West Coast Eagles midfielder Daniel Venables. It following the complete dispersal and sale of his previous home at Grandview Stud in Queensland.
Bjorn Baker rated Winning Rupert the fastest horse he had trained following a running double by a combined nine lengths in the LR Gold Edition Stakes (1200m) at Doomben and G3 Vo Rogue Plate (1300m) at Eagle Farm.
Ripper Rupert was bred and sold by Mungrup studmaster Gray Williamson for $30,000 at the 2024 Perth Magic Millions. He’s the first foal from Lady Magenta (Oratorio) who is an unraced daughter of G2 Champion Fillies Stakes (1200m) winner Spirit Lady (Dauberval).
Her second is a colt by Geisel Park sire Aysar catalogued as Lot 205 at the 2026 Perth Magic Millions Yearling Sale on Friday, 20 February.
Among Winning Rupert’s first WA-bred foals this season are fillies bred to go early from Loloma Farm’s Initial Plate (1000m) winner Bumper Humper (Alfred Nobel) and Darling View’s G2 Karrakatta Plate (1200m) runner-up Mystic Maid (Patronize).
Winning Rupert foals on the ground at Geisel Park include colts from French Quarter (Fiorente) who is a half-sister to G2 WA Guineas (1600m) winner Storyville (Overshare) and Spurt (Flying Spur) who is a half-sister to G2 Wellington Cup (2400m) winner Maygrove (NZ).
