Lynward Park doubled up at the Pearl Coast on Saturday when Sansanee (Bondi) opened the card in the North West Shed Masters Maiden (1300m) and stablemate King Mahuta (Mahuta) landed the $100,000 Broome Cup (2200m).
They continued a winning start to the season for Lynward Park following homebred 3yo filly Riva Aquarama (Star Turn) at Belmont on August 13 and its Bullsbrook-bred 2021 Perth Magic Millions graduate Manhattan Strip (Manhattan Rain) at Northam on August 8.
Sansanee was overdue to break her duck after placings at Northam, Albany, Carnarvon and Port Hedland and she was a convincing winner for trainer Brett Pope and part-owner Donald O’Shannassy who bred her with Pope’s partner Tameeka Brown.
Bondi (Snitzel) sired Sansanee in his first crop at Lynard Park and her dam Renown Lady (Due Sasso) is a half-sister to Buhn Lert (Oratorio) who foaled the O’Shannassy-bred G2 Karrakatta Plate (1200m) winner Ex Sport Man (Playing God).
Pope was confident King Mahuta could go one better in Broome after powering home to finish a close second to Reginald (Casino Prince) in the Port Hedland Cup (2200m) on August 3. Reginald endeavoured to win back-to-back Cups with front-running tactics but was fair game for the closers on Saturday.
King Mahuta was trapped three wide under Elisha Whittington but was good enough to drop the leader before surging clear and then lifting to defeat the War Chant (USA) journeymen Gambler’s Gold and Civvy Street.
“His last run in the Hedland Cup was huge,” Pope said. “There was probably about eight winning chances that day and he did a lot of work circling them into the straight. He was actually off balance going from dirt to grass and couldn’t catch Reginald.”
Former Lynward Park sire Mahuta (Flying Spur) got the Cup winner from Strawberry Street (Vital Equine). He was also bred by Tameeka and is from the family of G1 Caulfield Cup winner Cole Diesel (Brigand).
Prior to the Broome Cup, The West Australian reported Mahuta had been purchased to cover his first book in Thailand this season. Bondi stands for a $6,600 (inc GST) service fee at Lynward Park. For bookings or further information call Troy van Heemst on 0439 957 111.
