Dawson Stud started October with a winning double and finished the month with another brace when its Magic Millions graduates Cable Rock (Cable Bay) and Bopping Blue (Magnus) won at Belmont on Wednesday.
Cable Rock scored first-up in the Wittens Irrigation Maiden (1200m) and that made amends for some narrow defeats earlier this year. Starting a $2.70 favourite, he eased around the heels of The Agency (A Lot) in the straight and then turned back the late bids of Romantic Ruler (Universal Ruler) and Spangledstar (Starspangledbanner).
“He really progressed in his last campaign and that’s a good start today,” co-trainer Sean Casey said. “He should have won by now but this is the first time I’ve had him cherry ripe in a maiden.”
During that autumn prep, Cable Rock was beaten nose by Westcoast Express (Per Incanto) at Belmont and another nose by Watch Me Rock (Awesome Rock) at Ascot. And Casey admitted he almost put the binoculars down again on Wednesday when the Trevor Andrews-trained The Agency hit the front.
“You can’t beat Trevor’s horses at the moment but our bloke fought back really well. It’s great for the owner who has been a long-term client of our stable.”
Winning jockey Clint Johnston-Porter was also happy with the result when returning to scale. “He’s been knocking on the door and was pretty stiff the last time I rode him so it was good to get it right today.”
Cable Rock (4g Cable Bay – Sitkamose by Shamardal) changed hands for $26,000m at the 2022 Perth Magic Millions out of the Dawson Stud (as agent) consignment. He was bred by Woodside Park in partnership with Graham Daws and was purchased by Doug Sedgewick who has been racing with the Caseys for 30 years.
His dam Sitkamose was bred by Makybe Racing & Breeding and was a Kyneton maiden winner at her second and penultimate start for trainer Mark Kavanagh. One of her half-sisters foaled G1 ATC Champagne Stakes (1600m) winner Pasadena Girl (Savabeel).
Sitkamose has an unraced 3yo filly named Principal Dealer (Dundeel) with Neville Parnham and her most recent foals are 2yo filly and filly foal by G1 South Australian Derby (2400m) winner Russian Camelot (Ire) who stands at Widden Stud.
Dawson Stud had been in the frame earlier this month with its winning graduates Pierata’s Gem (Pierro) at Doomben and Influencing (Oratorio) on Cup Day in Kalgoorlie.
Another major client for the Caseys has been Wally Daly and his pink and blue checked colours will be seen to advantage on a Toronado – Secret Mak (Lonhro) colt that topped Dawson Stud’s draft to the 2024 Perth Magic Millions.
He sold for $230,000 to Maureen Daly in the Swan Valley and has been named The Rocket.
