Coolmore buys Amelia’s Jewel for $3.8 million

Group 1 winning WA-bred mare Amelia’s Jewel was always going to be popular at the Inglis Chairman’s Sale and that’s how it played out when she was purchased by Coolmore Stud for $3.8 million on Thursday evening at Riverside Stables.

Amelia’s Jewel is by Champion French sire Siyouni from Irish black-type winner Bumbasina and the appeal of her international pedigree was enhanced with a Group 1 triumph in the WATC Northerly Stakes (1800m) at Ascot and a Group 2 victory in the Stock Stakes (1600m) at Moonee Valley beating Pride of Jenni in course record time.

“Tonight was a moment we will never forget,” Amelia Park posted on Facebook.  “To have our beautiful Amelia’s Jewel sell to the best breeding establishment in the world is all we wanted.  This will only enhance our boutique breeding operation as it’s put us on a world wide stage.”

Coolmore Australia principal Tom Magnier confirmed Amelia’s Jewel has run her last race and will join its world-class broodmare band in Kentucky.  “She needs no introduction and we’re delighted to get her.  We will send her to America and she will be covered by Justify (USA) to southern-hemisphere time.”

Amelia’s Jewel was consigned by Segenhoe Stud (as agent) who foaled and raised her for owner-breeder Peter Walsh.  She was the last lot to parade on a night that saw record turnover of $54.43 million at an average of $706,800.

“We always wanted to sell her here and tonight absolutely exemplified why this is the best sale for mares,” Segenhoe’s Peter O’Brien said.  “The catalogue was so strong and you could just feel the energy of the room.

“Peter’s daughter Sammi and his bloodstock manager Sharon (King) are here and it was just incredible.  Walshy is in China with his wife Annie but I’ve spoken to him and he said he could fill an empty glass full of Annie’s tears.  Tears of happiness.”
