Flying filly a fighter for Exceedance

Exceedance has joined Pierata as the only freshmen to sire multiple black-type winners this season following Flyer’s victory in the SAJC David Coles AM Stakes (Gr.3, 1200m) at Morphettville.

Exceedance (Exceed And Excel) was first cab off the rank among the latest first-season sire intake when his spring colt Dublin Down won the Group 3 VRC Maribyrnong Plate (1000m) and he returned for an autumn Group 3 in the ATC Pago Pago Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill

Flyer (2f Exceedance – Miss Toorak Flyer by Toorak Toff) had won on debut at Sandown Lakeside in February and she recovered from a slow start only to be blocked for a run turning for home on Saturday.

The favourite Karavas (Alabama Express) was being hailed a winner well into the straight but was on notice once Flyer found clear air at the furlong.  “We’ve pretty much put her to the sword this prep and she’s kept soldiering on,” trainer Jason Warren acknowledged.  “We threw her in at the deep end of the (Group 1) Blue Diamond Stakes and got her over here to try and get some crucial black-type.

“It wasn’t exactly painless.  She was held up but she’s a class filly and it was a tough effort to come back and run down the leader.”

Warren also prepared her dam Miss Toorak Flyer to four short-course wins around the Victorian provincial circuit for Rosemont Stud’s Anthony Mithen.  Flyer is her second homebred black-type winner for the Gnarwarre nursery and part-owner Barry Charman following Treasurway (Starspangledbanner) in the 2023 SAJC Breeders Stakes (Gr.3, 1200m).

Craig Williams piloted both fillies to their Group 3 victories in Adelaide and he was impressed with the fight in Flyer over the concluding stages.  “Jason told me she had really come on during the last fortnight over here and the further into the race, the better she went.

“She had to make up at least a length on the leader but she picked up nicely and was solid late.”

Flyer’s three-quarter brother by Exceed And Excel was purchased for $650,000 at this year’s Gold Coast Magic Millions by Suman Hedge Bloodstock as agent for clients of trainers Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott.

Exceedance has 3 foals and 17 yearlings catalogued for the Magic Millions National Sale starting on Sunday week, May 26.  Baramul Stud commences his Gold Coast draft with the filly foal from Blue Belle Of Asia (I Am Invincible) on Day 1.

Catalogued as Lot 34, she is the first foal of Belle Of Asia who is unraced daughter of MRC Thousand Guineas (Gr.1, 1600m) winner Commanding Jewel (Commands).  It’s the immediate family of Champion Australian 3YO Filly Atlantic Jewel (Fastnet Rock) and her international Group 1-winning son Russian Emperor (Galileo).

Vinery stands Exceedance (Exceed And Excel) for a $33,000 (inc GST) service fee with payment on a live foal.  For bookings or further information, contact Adam, Harry, McKoy or Peter on (02) 6543 8333.
