Great Southern galloper Major Flirt appreciated the drop back from Listed company to cause a $53 boilover in the Murray Veterinary Services Westspeed Platinum Sires Stakes (1200m) on Saturday.
Major Flirt tailed the field before apprentice Zephen Johnston-Porter sent him through a narrow split late to land an unlikely victory although it didn’t surprise trainer Roy Rogers. “He charged home in the (LR) Lee-Steere Stakes last start so I think he got under people’s guard today. He’s still raw, still a colt and is very well-bred.
“A Melbourne buyer called after the Lee-Steere but he must have thought they could get him quite cheaply.”
Major Flirt (3c Rommel – Suzebabe by Testa Rossa) was a topical tip on G2 Ted van Heemst Stakes Day. He was bred by Ted and Marilyn van Heemst and was a $50,000 graduate out of their Lynward Park consignment to the 2024 Perth Magic Millions.
Rogers races the colt with his partner Grace Smith and stable client Gavin Schultz. He’s by Ridgeport Farm sire Rommel and hails from a very successful Peters Investments family headed by G1 Railway Stakes (1600m) winner Galaxy Star (Redoute’s Choice).
Jaz Session capped a year to remember for Muchea trainer Justine Erkelens when the consistent mare won the Ridgeport 2026 Magic Millions Yearlings Epona Classic (1200m) on Saturday.
Erkelens also prepares dual classic-winning filly Machine Gun Gracie (Maschino) and her Ascot debutante The Nun (Churchill) was named a TBWA Winner Of The Week last Monday.
Jaz Session (5m Sessions – Jaz Me Up by War Chant) has won 5 of her 9 starts in town since May and the latest victory at Ascot sent her earnings through $300,000. She peeled off the heels of front-runner Lucky I Am (Universal Ruler) half-way down the straight and had enough in reserve to just deny the favourite Supernatural (Sessions).
There was only a short half-head between the daughters of Oakland Park sire Sessions (Lonhro) and Erkelens is looking to improve the winner’s record before she eventually heads to the breeding barn. “She carried 60kg today and has been a ripper for her owner Ian Rickwood who is hoping for some black-type going forward.”
Jaz Session was bred by Greenfields Lodge owner Tony Patrizi and sold to agent John Chalmers for $24,000 the 2022 Perth Magic Millions Yearling Sale. Patrizi has been breeding from her family for generations going back third-dam Entrant (Royal Academy) and second-dam Mount Difficulty (Tale of the Cat).
