Maschino marvel wins Ascot Mile

Bonjoy knows how to demoralise a field with a tremendous turn of foot and she was at it again on Saturday in the LR Ascot Mile (1600m).

Her colours have been lowered just once in the last 8 starts for Karnup-based Jason and Sharon Miller who train and manage the mare for a syndicate that has now banked $535,000 including Westspeed Bonuses of $132,000.

“She’s quirky but has done everything right today,” stable rep Luke Smith said.  “She was in a good frame of mind and she always turns up on raceday.  She’s one of those horses you would love to own.  She’s just a proper professional.”

Bonjoy was completing an Ascot black-type hat-trick following the LR Australia Day Stakes (1500m) last month and Starstruck Classic (1600m) in December and Miller is on record as rating her a Group 1 candidate for next season’s Railway Stakes.

Winning jockey Clint Johnston-Porter also believes she has the potential to make the grade in a race like the Railway.  “She’s a lovely horse on the up and has really matured in the last three months,” he told The West Australian.  “Her attitude is getting better every time she comes here and her wins are getting more impressive.

“She jumps and gets out clean then travels beautifully in the run.  When I’m ready to pull the trigger, she’s just itching to go.  She’s got it down pretty well and hopefully there’s bigger and better things in the future.”

Bonjoy was bred and sold by Alwyn Park owner John Andrew for $60,000 at the 2021 Perth Magic Millions.  She’s the first foal from Amity Belle (Snitzel) who is an unraced half-sister to 2017 LR Sheila Gwynne Classic (1400m) winner Dendee (Denman).

Her second foal Audio Boy (Sessions) also won over a mile at Ascot earlier this season for Geoff Bull.  Amity Belle has an unraced 2yo colt and a colt on the ground by Maschino who were both bred by Coral Park.

Maschino (Encosta de Lago) has 18 yearlings catalogued for this month’s Perth Magic Millions and the first to parade for Alwyn Park is the colt from Morning Son (Bernardini) being offered as agent for De Grey Stud (Lot 93).  The dam won five races in Perth up to 2200m and she is a half-sister to Devoted (LR Raconteur Stakes & LR Belmont Guineas).
