Shalaa strikes Gold for Mogumber Park

Mogumber Park received its latest update for the Perth Magic Millions Yearling Sale when Shalaa Gold scored as easy as you like at Warwick Farm on Monday.

The Bjorn Baker-trained 3yo jumped to the front and was under a hold before kicking clear in the Schweppes Plate (1100m).  There was a fleeting challenge from Everybody Rise (Snitzel) but a reminder from Josh Parr was sufficient to stop him stargazing and win with ears pricked.

Shalaa Gold (Shalaa) has a younger half-brother by Widden Stud sire Anders (Not a Single Doubt) catalogued as Lot 96 by Mogumber Park (as agent) on Thursday, February 20.  “He’s a relaxed colt with a lovely walk and plenty of scope,” Mogumber Park owner Colin Brown said this week.  “And we’re really happy with the way he’s grown out.”

Baker was also pleased with Shalaa Gold’s breakthrough victory at his home track.  He went out an odds-on favourite after finishing runner-up in his first four starts including a close second to subsequent G1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m) winner Private Life (Written Tycoon).  “No more Shalaa Silver.  Now it’s Shalaa Gold!” Baker posted on Facebook.  “That was a well-earned win and proves persistence pays off.”

Mogumber Park offers the Anders colt on behalf of Justin Docherty who bought his dam Murtle Turtle (Murtajill) for $50,000 at the 2023 Inglis Great Southern Sale in Melbourne.  She was carrying a PPT to Anders and followed up with a colt from the first crop of Mogumber Park’s G2 Rubiton Stakes (1100m) winner Marine One (Capitalist).

“That also makes the Anders colt Westspeed eligible,” Brown revealed.  “Justin is a shareholder in Marine One and is a great supporter of him at stud.   The mare’s Marine One colt is all quality and  she is back in foal to him.  We delivered 24 foals by Marine One earlier this season and all bar four of them were colts.”

Murtle Turtle was a 2yo winner in Adelaide and was also Group 3-placed twice at Morphettville.  Her older half-brother Excavator (Happy Giggle) was a Canada Cup winner in Singapore and she is now five from five at stud.  Her Hong Kong expat California Deeply (Deep Field) won for the third time at Happy Valley last month for trainer Tony Cruz.

Mogumber Park has 19 lots heading down to the Swan Valley Sale from Bullsbrook including three colts and a filly by its multiple Champion 2yo sire Safeguard (Exceed And Excel).  The filly (Lot 13) is one of 9 winners from Clarecastle (Tribu) with the most recent being this season’s Safeguard flyer Castle Road.
