Ace mare a winning match at Yarradale

Western Breeders Alliance graduate Red Can Man has opened this season’s black-type account for WA’s leading vendors in the LR Crawford Stakes (1000m) at Belmont.

The Gingerbread Man gelding was winning for the first time since the G3 Sir John Monash Stakes (1100m) at Caulfield in July 2021.  He was also the second-leg of a double for WBA on Saturday following Brooklyn Pier (Magnus) in the Jayde Kinane Hcp (1200m).

Red Can Man has been an ever-present in Perth’s major sprints and was runner-up at Group 3 level last season to This’ll Testya (Colonel Reeves Stakes) and Amelia’s Jewel (Roma Cup).  “He’s a great horse but hasn’t had a lot of luck,” trainer Steve Wolfe said.  “He’s been beaten by the best sprinters in the State and it’s great to see him back here winning first-up.”

Leading south-west breeder Ellie Giles sent her mare Brocky’s Ace (Surtee) to Yarradale Stud twice before she was served by Gingerbread Man.  First-up, she was covered by Discorsi (Galileo) to produce Boutique who only got as far as a Bunbury maiden but at stud has foaled The Pinnacles-bound 3yo Zipaway (Playing God).

Brocky’s Ace foaled Quilista second-up at Gidgegannup.  By Scandal Keeper (Danzig), she won the 2017 WA Breeders’ Classic at Bunbury and transferred east for three more black-type strikes topped by the G2 Sapphire Stakes at Randwick.

Quilista was sold to Cressfield for $1 million at the 2021 Magic Millions National Sale on the Gold Coast.  Her current 2yo is a Pierata filly that was retained by Cressfield owner Bruce Neill and her yearling is a filly by Snitzel.

Western Breeders Alliance sold Red Can Man, as agent for Giles, for $50,000 at the 2018 Perth Magic Millions and he’s banked $1.38 million with upcoming Ascot targets worth $1.5 million in the G1 Winterbottom Stakes (1200m) and G3 The Gold Rush (1400m).

Brocky’s Ace foaled a fourth winner off the Yarradale roster when her Wolfe-trained War Chant (USA) 3yo Insyde Success claimed a Northam maiden on debut last month.  The mare’s 2yo is an unraced Gingerbread Man gelding named Daytona Pete and he’s also with Wolfe.

Gingerbread Man (Shamardal) stands for $5,500 at Yarradale Stud alongside War Chant (Danzig) at $8,250.  Both fees (inc GST).
