Former Kiwi galloper Savatag completed a long-distance hat-trick for trainer Will Clarken and Bluegrass Bloodstock (FBAA) agent Lenny Russo in Adelaide on Saturday.

Savatag (5g Alamosa – All in Tune by Grosvenor) had shown potential last year winning a Wanganui maiden (1340m) and Awapuni Rating 65 (1400m) for trainer Jaimee-Lee Lupton.

“He’s a nice horse and is already looking for more ground,” jockey Jake Toeroek said after a first-up victory in the Highway Hotel Hcp (1400m) at Morphettville. “He came off the bit earlier than I expected but really hit his straps in the last 100 metres.”

Savatag is from a winning half-sister to (It’s) All In Fun who was a Group 1 winner of an Auckland Classic and Waikato International before criss-crossing the Tasman to win a G3 Coongy Hcp at Sandown.

“Will approached me at the races to keep him in mind if I found a suitable tried horse in New Zealand,” Russo recalled. “Not long after, I rang and told him I had found an Alamosa gelding named Savatag.

“I had already purchased The Willybe by Alamosa and I like the stallion. He won two in a row at Morphettville for Peter Gelagotis last September.

“It gives me great confidence when I purchase these tried horses from New Zealand and then they go to trainers like Will, Pete, Shea Eden and Scotty Brunton. I know they will get every chance.”

Russo purchased So You Think galloper Mr So and So for $100,000 at the Melbourne Premier Sale on behalf of Dream Thoroughbreds manager Dave Azzopardi and he’s ready to break through in stakes company after Group 2 placings in the Autumn Stakes and Autumn Classic at Caulfield this month.

Mr Sneaky (High Chaparral) is another high-class Dream Thoroughbreds – Bluegrass buy knocking on the door in Melbourne. He was in the firing line turning for home in the G1 Futurity Stakes on Saturday and only knocked up behind Brave Smash and co in the final stages.
