Frankel is poised to join the greatest horses of the modern era after producing a career-best performance in the G1 Queen Anne Stakes (1600m) on Tuesday.
Timeform’s all-time top ranked horse is Sea Bird (145) followed by Brigadier Gerard and Tudor Minstrel on 144. Frankel started the year with a 143 Timeform rating and his mark is sure to be elevated after an 11 length demolition at Royal Ascot.
Sea Bird (Dan Cupid) was awarded a 145 Timeform rating after breathtaking victories in the 1965 English Derby and Arc de Triomphe.
Frankel (4c Galileo – Kind by Danehill) is now unbeaten in 11 starts for Juddmonte Farms and trainer Sir Henry Cecil. “I’m not surprised but relieved, no horse is a certainty,” Cecil said. “He’s a great horse, he did exactly what I thought he would but he’s still improving!
“It looks like he will stay a mile and a quarter (2000m). He’s in the Eclipse, Sussex Stakes and Juddmonte but we will feel our way and he will tell us what to do.”
Jockey Tom Queally had trouble pulling up the winner after such a relentless gallop and he was equally impressed. “He settled and travelled. He’s amazing. That was his best performance and I couldn’t have asked for anything more.”
Runner-up Excelebration, who is slated to shuttle to Coolmore Australia, was a spent force in the final furlong after trying to go with the champion. “We were delighted with our horse,” trainer Aidan O’Brien said. “But Frankel is unbelievable.”
Frankel’s dam King was a Nottingham stakes winner and her first foal Bullet Train (Sadler’s Wells) acted as a pacemaker for Frankel in the Queen Anne. Her third foal Noble Mission (Galileo) was a stakes winner at Newmarket earlier this year and the mare has an unraced 2yo colt named Morpheus (Oasis Dream) and a yearling filly by Oasis Dream.
Frankel’s damsire Danehill was also raced by Juddmonte Farm owner Khalid Abdulla. Before starting a dynasty of own at stud, Danehill won the 1989 Cork & Orrery Stakes at Royal Ascot. That race is now known as the G1 Golden Jubilee Stakes.
