Angel wings it at Flemington

One-horse trainer Philip Evans hobbled into the enclosure on the double after Angelic Lass won the Mercieca & Cook Hcp (1410m) at Flemington on Saturday.

The God’s Own mare gave Evans a first-ever victory at headquarters.  The Tatura-based trainer has been battling a leg problem and he thanked family and friends after the mare recorded her fifth win in 20 starts.  She began rising up the ranks last year at Wodonga, Swan Hill, Wangaratta and Kilmore.

Angelic Lass (5m God’s Own – Carnival Lass by Dehere) was a $12,000 buy at the 2010 Inglis Melbourne Autumn Yearling Sale.  “It’s such a thrill to get a win at Flemington,” Evans said.  “We picked her out at the sales.  It’s been a long journey and this makes it all worthwhile.”

Specked at $21, her price had halved by the time they jumped.  Making a good thing of it, Dean Yendall rated her to perfection in front and then found a kick passing the furlong.  “I knew she would be hard to run down on the minimum ,” Evans continued.  “And then Dean got a couple of cheap sectionals.”

Angelic Lass opened this season’s account for Greta West Stud sire God’s Own.  He’s had four crops racing and the wins graph has spiralled every season from 5 – 37 – 90 – 130.

Win No.1 for season ending 2014 is from Carnival Lass, a Guy Walter trained mare with wins around the Sydney provincials to her credit.  She is a half-sister to Imana (Thunder Gulch) who won to G3 level in the STC Birthday Card Hcp.

God’s Own (Redoute’s Choice) will stand for a $5,500 (inc gst) service fee at Greta West this year alongside Keep The Faith (Sunday Silence) and King Of Prussia (Anabaa).
