Local colt Anacheeva continued the winning run of Inglis graduates in the G1 Caulfield Guineas when he scored an on-pace victory in Australia’s premier mile race for three year-olds yesterday.
Inglis graduates have now claimed seven of the past nine Caulfield Guineas including the past four with Weekend Hussler (Hussonet), Whobegotyou (Street Cry), Starspangledbanner (Choisir) and Anacheeva.
Anacheeva (3c Anabaa – Monroe Magic by Zabeel) was a $110,000 buy from the Widden Stud consignment at the 2009 Inglis Easter yearling sale. Widden has also enjoyed a winning run in the Caulfield Guineas having sold Whobegotyou and 2002 winner Helenus through its Newmarket sales complex.
Moody received poor vet reports on the colt’s x-rays prior to last year’s Easter Sale but decided to take a punt knowing the purchase price was well-below his real market value. “He was a bargain at $110,000,” Moody explained. “I thought he looked a nice athletic horse, so we took a chance.”
Anacheeva was an impressive debut winner at Sale last season and he showed enough talent for Moody to take him interstate where he ran a close up fourth in the G1 Champagne Stakes at Randwick.
He is by deceased Widden shuttler Anabaa and is a half-brother G1 AJC Australian Derby winner Headturner (Anabaa) and G2 STC Premiere Stakes winner Kroner (Viking Ruler).
Anacheeva will now be set for the G1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) at Flemington on October 30. Anabaa can achieve a posthumous double at the elite level a week later when his champion mare Goldikova goes for a three-peat in the Breeders’ Cup Mile at Churchill Downs.
