Sunspeed stallion Viscount grabbed a second Group 1 win in a fortnight when Happy Gladiator won the Chairman’s Challenge Cup in Macau on Sunday.
Viscount is also the sire of Singapore superstar Rocket Man who won the G1 Golden Shaheen on the Dubai World Cup card.
Happy Gladiator (4g Viscount – Church On Sunday by Bubble Gum Fellow) led all the way m in a bullet 1.08.90s for 1200m. He crossed from an outside barrier to win by two lengths from Super Alloy (Kheleyf) and Dr Sweet (King Cugat).
Brazilian jockey Fausto Durso, who took over from Aaron Spiteri, was fined for a celebratory gesture prior to the winning post.
Happy Gladiator has won 10 of his 15 starts and earned the equivalent of AUD 448,735. He was purchased by trainer Gary Moore and owner Ye Hanqiang for $57,500 at the 2008 Inglis Scone yearling sale.
Viscount (Quest For Fame) was a G1 winner of the AJC Sires’ Produce Stakes, Champagne Stakes and George Main Stakes at Randwick and stands for a $9,000 fee at Neville Duncan’s Oakland Park in WA.
He started stud life at Woodlands and, although still only a 12 year-old, has sired 197 individual winners of 481 races at a 54% strike-rate. His Australian based G1 winners include Kidnapped (South Australian Derby) and Neroli (STC Queen of the Turf Stakes).
Happy Gladiator’s dam Church On Sunday is a half-sister to G2 VRC Maribyrnong Plate winner Sanziro (Danzero) and G3 SAJC Irwin Stakes winner Flying Object (Peintre Celebre).
A Shaft – Church On Sunday filly has been catalogued for the Magic Millions National yearling sale in June.
