Tokugawa brought back memories of Group 1 sprinter Starspangledbanner with his victory in the Inglis Bonus Handicap (1400m) at Sandown on Saturday.
Tokugawa (3c Choisir – Tirumani by Last Tycoon) is trained by Leon Corstens for the Newmarc / Spicer Bloodstock team. They combined to win the first-ever Inglis Bonus with Choisir colt Starspangledbanner on Cox Plate day in 2008.
Starspangledbanner graduated to Group 1 victories in Australia and abroad before Coolmore secured him for stud duties in a multi-million dollar deal.
Tokugawa may never reach those heights but connections have enjoyed a financial windfall after paying just $55,000 for him at the 2009 Easter II yearling sale.
The colt is a half-brother to five winners including G2 MVRC Stocks Stakes winner Astrodame (Flying Spur). Second dam Midnight Fever (Luskin Star) was a G1 winner of the 1987 VATC Blue Diamond Stakes for Lindsay Park.
