Atlantic Jewel main course in Memsie

Fast ‘N’ Rocking became the 46th stakes winner for Fastnet Rock with a sensational victory in the G3 McNeil Stakes (1200m) on Saturday.

But that was only an entree for the Coolmore Stud sire at Caulfield.

Later in the day, his champion five year-old Atlantic Jewel served up a win to remember in the G1 Memsie Stakes (1400m).  The Mark Kavanagh trained mare made a top-class field look second-rate when resuming from a 16 month injury-enforced spell.

“She’s got so much improvement from today, it’s frightening,” Kavanagh said.  “We have plenty of options leading up to the Cox Plate and we will just enjoy the moment for now.”

Atlantic Jewel (5m Fastnet Rock – Regard by Zabeel) had been off the scene since a history-making victory in the G1 All Aged Stakes at Randwick in April 2012.  She was the first filly since Valicare in 1926 to win the time-honoured weight-for-age race at Randwick.

“We know how good she is and the only way they were going to beat her was bad luck or a bad ride,” winning jockey Michael Rodd said.  “She lets down so quick and went past them so easy.  I sat up on her at the finish, so she turned off the afterburners and cruised over the line.”

Atlantic Jewel was bred by Greg Perry and sold through the draft of Vinery Stud for $320,000 at the 2010 Gold Coast Magic Millions.  She races for a Coolmore Stud syndicate along with part-owners Mathilde Texier and Laurie Macri.

Australia’s new pin-up mare is now unbeaten in 8 starts for over $1.13 million in prizemoney.  Her dam Regard, a grand-daughter of G1 Cheveley Park Stakes winner Pass the Peace, died in August 2011.

The mare’s  only other foal Commanding Jewel (Commands) won the G1 Thousand Guineas last October and is also set for a lucrative spring campaign.
