Aussie Rules dies at Lanwades Stud

Former Cooolmore Stud shuttler Aussie Rules (USA) has died at Newmarket-based Lanwades Stud in England.

The 13 year-old grey stallion was put down on veterinary advice after a short illness due to a tumour.  “He was a lovely, co-operative horse to work with,” Lanwades owner Kirsten Rausing said.  “He had an enthusiasm and zest for life and that makes his loss all the harder to bear.”

Aussie Rules (Danehill – Last Second by Alzao) was trained by Aidan O’Brien to win the G3 Somerville Stakes at two and went on to win the G1 French 2000 Guineas and G1 Shadwell Turf Mile at Keeneland.

He has sired 18 stakes winners headed by G1 Irish Matron Stakes winner Fiesolana and his best southern bred galloper was G3 Lee-Steere Classic winner Hard Ball Get.

Aussie Rules shuttled to Coolmore Stud’s Hunter Valley property for four seasons until 2010 and was transferred to Lanwades two years later.  He has sired more than 100 individual 2yo winners and, overall, the winners of 800 races worldwide.
