Day 2 of the NZ Bloodstock National Sale at Karaka on Tuesday saw the weanling session close with results improving further on Monday’s trade. Top price on Tuesday was a Pins colt from winning Danehill mare Dane Shakira (Lot 356) that realised $130,000 from the draft of Shelby Park.
The final foal turnover of NZ$3.82 million was up 59% on last year and the average of $11,388 increased by 26%. The clearance rate climbed steadily to finish at a respectable 80%.
Co-Managing Director Petrea Vela said the results reflect the mixed demand over the course of the two weanling sessions. “Nice horses were commanding good money but there is very limited demand for the lesser pedigreed horses, particularly fillies. However, we can still take heart from the solid demand that continues for good commercial stock.”
Gordon Cunningham’s Curraghmore Stud stole the show as the leading vendor for the fifth year in a row, claiming 4 of the Top 10 lots in the sale and selling a total of 19 lots for $789,200.
The first 136 of the broodmare offering went under the hammer on Tuesday afternoon with 91 sold for $884,850 at an average of $9,724. The top price came when Tim Stakemire bid $60,000 to secure Miller’s Pride who is in foal to Darci Brahma. He was acting for Sheikh Mohammed Bin Khalifa Al Maktoum.
The remaining 201 broodmares, yearlings, two-year-olds, unraced stock, racehorses, stallion shares and supplementary entries will go under the hammer on Wednesday.
