Azamour colt tops Day 1 at Tattersalls Breeze-Up Sale

An Azamour colt topped opening session of the two-day Tattersalls Craven Breeze-Up Sale on Wednesday evening.

He was purchased by Sir Robert Ogden for 315,000gns.  “We liked this horse an awful lot,” Ogden’s racing manager Barry Simpson said.  “We saw the horse in Ireland and liked him then and his breeze confirmed our belief.”

The session topper is out of the Polar Falcon mare Khayrat, a half sister to One Thousand Guineas Trial winner Khaytada (Doyoun).  He was originally purchased as a yearling by Margaret O’Toole for 58,000 euros at Goffs in Ireland last September.

Azamour (Night Shift) stands at the Aga Khan’s Gilltown Stud in Ireland after a career that included G1 victories in the King George, Irish Champion Stakes, St James Palace Stakes and Prince Of Wales Stakes.

His oldest are four year-olds and include Native Khan who is an even-money favourite for the G3 Craven Stakes at Newmarket on Thursday.

Next on the leader board was a 200,000gns Iffraaj filly followed by a 195,000gns Bernardini colt.

The Day 1 average of 74,475gns was down 4.5% from last year.  The clearance rate improved 8 points to 72%.
