Battle royale for WA broodmare title

The WA Broodmares’ premiership is developing into a battle royale with no more than $5,000 between Metal Storm (Fr) and Scenic (Ire).

Latest figures have Metal Storm’s mares producing the winners of 74 races this season and $3,231,513 in prizemoney.  His mare Europium retired a maiden after 10 starts for Fred Kersley and her first starter Moment Of Change (Barely A Moment) was a Group 1 winner of the Futurity Stakes and C F Orr Stakes at Caulfield in February.

Metal Storm (Kenmare) stood at Mungrup Stud for seven seasons until his premature death aged 13 in September 2001.  He is also the damsire of this year’s G2 WATC Derby winner Respondent (Haradasun), G3 Maurice McCarten Stakes winner Kencella (Exceed And Excel) and Perth Listed winners Pop Culture (Blackfriars) & Kalahaar (Choisir).

Mares by Scenic have foaled the winners of 165 races this season for $3,226,013 in prizemoney.  His stakes winners include G3 WA Sires’ Produce Stakes winner Prentice (Blackfriars).

Prentice is the third black-type winner representing the Blackfriars – Scenic cross following Eclair Surprise and Rosie Rocket.

Scenic (Sadler’s Wells) served out his career at Muchea after starting out at Lindsay Park.  He died in March 2005 and his Western Australian base was renamed Scenic Lodge in 2012.
