Belle tolls for St Trinians

USA based mare St Trinians, a daughter of former Eureka Stud shuttler Piccolo, has been retired from racing by trainer Mike Mitchell.

St Trinians (GB) won 8 races including G2 victories in the 2010 Santa Maria Handicap at Santa Anita and 2011 Milady Hcp at Hollywood Park.

St Trinians (6m Piccolo – Cherrycombe-Row by Classic Cliche) won the Adoration Stakes at Del Mar on September 4 and was being aiming toward the G1 Spinster Stakes at Keeneland next month.

Instead, she will be sold as a broodmare prospect at the Keeneland Breeding Stock Sale in November after injuring an ankle earlier this week.

St Trinians began her career in England with three wins at Wolverhampton before USA based owners Dan Capen and Laura Chavers purchased her privately for just $85,000.

The Piccolo mare nearly caused a huge upset in the G1 Vanity Handicap last year.  She had Zenyatta under pressure in the straight until the champion surged late to win by a half-length.

“I only have one picture on the wall of me getting beat,” Mitchell said. “That’s the Vanity when we got beat by Zenyatta.”
