Singapore trainer Michael Freedman is already talking about a Group 1 goal for his emerging sprinter Better Be The One.  The More Than Ready gelding was a stakes winner in Australia and he is undefeated in two starts at Kranji.

Better Be The One was known as Common Interest back home and won races at Flemington (2), Bendigo, Sandown and Moonee Valley.  The best of them was a Listed victory of the Schweppes Tonic at headquarters on the same day Shocking won the Melbourne Cup.

Better Be The One (4g More Than Ready – Common Smytzer by Snippets) already has a big fan in Singapore.  “He’s clearly the best horse I’ve ridden here,” jockey Vlad Duric said after the latest victory last Friday night.  “He’s a bit of a goer and put them away like a smart horse.”

The Singapore newcomer cost $485,000 as a yearling when offered by Makybe at the 2008 Inglis Easter Sale.  He is by Vinery’s champion shuttler More Than Ready (Southern Halo) and is a half brother to G3 Maribyrnong Plate winner Exceedingly Good (Exceed and Excel).

Secret Hill Thoroughbreds in Queensland has been home to Exceedingly Good for the last two years.  He was a $400,000 purchase by Freedman at the 2007 Inglis Easter Sale.

“Better Be The One has got a nice future here,” Freedman said after the three length romp second-up.  “He was a pretty aggressive horse back home but we knew he was handy.  He’s relaxed since being gelded and will get 1400m.”

Freedman will set Better Be The One for the Merlion Trophy in March and then, all going well, the G1 Lion City Cup in May.
