A Stormy Atlantic filly related to Vinery shuttler Big Brown topped the Canadian yearling sale on Tuesday at Woodbine.  

She sold for C$130,000 (AUD 135,975) to Dick Bonnycastle’s Harlequin Ranches.  The sale topper is out of Theatre Fan (Theatrical), a half-sister to the dam of Big Brown (Boundary).  

Next on the leader-board at C$120,000 (AUD 125,515) was a colt by Canadian champion Perfect Soul (Ire) out of the winning mare Timber Ice (Woodman).

The select session of Canadian bred yearlings averaged C$28,802 (AUD 30,125) which was down 4% from 2009.  “There is tremendous vitality in Woodbine’s racing program,” Canadian Thoroughbred Horse Society chair Gail Wood said.  “Unfortunately, these figures prove the benefits have not yet trickled down to positive numbers for our breeders.”

There were six sales linked races at Woodbine to coincide with the CTHS Sale.  Mesa Cielo (Sky Mesa) led at every call in the Elgin Stakes and Lucky Be Me (Peaks and Valleys) fought off her stablemate Tree Pose to take the Muskoka Stakes by a nose.  

Don’s Folly (Tethra) rallied from well back to win the Kenora Stakes and Guipago (My Way Only) snatched victory away from odds-on favourite Society’s Chairman in the Halton Stakes.  Guipago was a cheap $1,200 buy at the 2007 CTHS yearling sale.

Invitation Only (One Way Love) broke his maiden with a dominant win in the Simcoe Stakes and Secret Wish (Street Cry) captured the Algoma Stakes to give trainer Elizabeth Charalambous her first stakes victory.
