Tony McEvoy believes his Blackfriars filly Light The Waves will measure up to black-type company following her easy maiden victory at Balaklava on Sunday.

Light The Waves (3f Blackfriars – Ancient Lights by Canny Lad) was backed into favouritism and won as easily as expected in the Matchbox House B&B Hcp (1380m).  She was perfectly placed by stable jockey Jamie Kah before extending in the straight to score by more than two lengths.

“She won a trial at Murray Bridge in January and we were confident she could win first-up at Morphettville,” McEvoy said.  “But she did everything wrong and was never in the race.  We changed her training routine, added blinkers and she delivered today.”

Light The Waves (pictured) was bred and sold for $85,000 by Scenic Lodge at the 2016 Perth Magic Millions.

“She was initially with Chris Waller until her owner Michael Birchall asked me to take over last year,” McEvoy explained.  “She will be suited up to 2000m and there are some nice races coming up in Adelaide.”

Scenic Lodge bought her dam Ancient Lights for $115,000 at the 2007 Inglis Sydney Broodmare Sale.  The mare’s yearling filly by Anabaa was also sold to Gerald Ryan that year.  She was named Dances On Waves and went on to win a G2 Villiers Stakes at Randwick.

Ancient Lights, who died in July 2015, is also second-dam of the Zabeel stakes winners Preferment (G1 Victoria Derby) and Rezoned (G3 SA Fillies Classic).

Light The Waves is the 68th individual winner by Blackfriars this season and his progeny have won a total of 92 races for $2.84 million in prizemoney.

The latest news out of Victoria suggests Black Heart Bart won’t be adding any dollars in the near future.  On Tuesday morning, the Darren Weir camp reported they are monitoring an ongoing hoof problem but time is running out to get him right for the autumn carnivals.
