Warrior’s Reward (USA) sired a stakes winning double on the weekend in advance of his arrival at Spendthrift Victoria.
His first crop three year-old Warriorscmoutoplay won the Jostle Stakes (1300m) in Philadelphia on Saturday and Requite landed the Big Cypress Hcp (1400m) at Gulfstream Park on Sunday.
Warrior’s Reward is a Group 1 winning son of Medaglia d’Oro and his first 8 juvenile starters won on debut from Santa Anita to Saratoga last year. “He’s passing on his great looks, pedigree and class in America,” Spendthrift owner B Wayne Hughes said. “His stud fee increased from US$15,000 to US$25,000 this year.
Warriorscmoutoplay (3f Warrior’s Reward – Celtic Sunshine by Victory Gallop) completed a hat-trick when cruising to a two-length victory in the Jostle Stakes. She won her maiden at Keeneland in April and then claimed a Churchill Downs allowance last month.
An $80,000 buy at the 2013 Keeneland September yearling sale, she has banked $140,000 for trainer Mike Stidham and Feel the Thunder Stable.
Trainer George Weaver will try for bigger and better things during the second half of the year for Requite after his colt’s half-length victory in the Big Cypress Hcp in Florida.
Requite started an odds-on favourite in his return to stakes competition for the first time since finishing fourth in last year’s G1 Hopeful Stakes at Saratoga and Weaver was happy to see his charge in a fight when challenged in the straight.
“He didn’t draw away from the field – the leader Grand Bili hung in there – but I thought he responded well to the battle,” Weaver said. “He’s classy enough to take him up north now and we’ll see what comes up.
“I’m not 100% sure just how far he wants to go. I’m not looking to go a mile now – he’s very fast, so we will concentrate on sprints.”
Requite (3c Warrior’s Reward – New Hope Seven by Carson City) is a homebred for Kentucky based Limestone Thoroughbreds owner Dr Wilfred Robinson. He broke his maiden in dynamic fashion at Saratoga last August before the G1 Hopeful and resumed this year for a three length victory in Gulfstream allowance on May 9.
Spendthrift Victoria will stand Warrior’s Reward for a “Share The Upside” fee of $13,750 (inc gst) and he’s also available at $11,000 (inc gst) on a standard live foal contract.
