Bolton boosts black-type count by Zabeel

Zabeel was featured in last Friday’s reports after Faron’s very impressive maiden win at Geelong and the Cambridge Stud champion continued the winning run over the weekend.

Bolton won the LR Victorian Cup at Caulfield on Saturday and Berio created headlines in Hong Kong on Sunday.

The Victorian Cup increased Zabeel’s black-type count to 139 winners of 332 races and trainer Stephen Brown will set Bolton for the G2 St George Stakes (1800m) at Caulfield.  “If he wins the St George we will pay a late-entry fee for the G1 Australian Cup,” Brown said.  “He’s going really well and we know he can run the distance now.”

Bolton (NZ) is a brother to G1 Queensland Oaks winner Vouvray and was originally purchased by Lloyd Williams for $425,000 at the 2008 Inglis Easter yearling sale.  He changed hands again last year and is now raced by a syndicate that includes Hay List’s part-owner Katie Davenport.

Berio landed a long-priced plunge at Sha Tin in the Amber Hcp (1600m) for trainer David Hall.  An avalanche of money arrived for the gelding including one bet of HK$4.50 million (AUD 541,000) seconds before the start.

Hall was as stunned as anyone when Berio held on to score by a short-head.  “The money wasn’t from the stable or the owner,” Hall said.  “He’s an old horse with arthritis so they were very brave to bet that much.”

Berio (NZ) is a three-quarter brother to LR VRC St Leger winner Berlioz.  His dam Abbaye (Ahonoora) is a half-sister to Danehill’s G1 winning sires Danewin and Commands.

Zabeel was third on the sires’ list at the 2012 Karaka yearling sale series last week with 21 lots averaging $233,810.

Meanwhile, Lloyd Williams has nominated Faron (NZ) for races at Bendigo and Ballarat this weekend.  Zabeel got him from a half-sister to G1 winners Easy Rocking and Fairy King Prawn.
