Bombora Downs signs Warhorse (NZ)

Flashback to January 2009 – the Australian breeding industry suffered a big loss with the premature death of outstanding sire General Nediym following a bout of colic.

The early loss of this prolific and popular sire became all the more significant following the birth of his final crop of foals in 2009.  Included in this crop were no less than 8 individual stakes winners, led by the NZ 2011-12 Champion 2YO Warhorse (NZ) who became General Nediym’s most successful son with multiple Group wins highlighted by the G1 Diamond Stakes (1200m) at Ellerslie.

Warhorse’s determined win in the Diamond Stakes followed his dominant display in winning the G3 Eclipse Stakes by more than two lengths running away, a very impressive victory after being posted three wide throughout.

Returning at three, Warhorse scored a strong win in the LR Bonecrusher Stakes (1400m) followed up by a brave third beaten under half a length by Sacred Falls in the G1 NZ 2000 Guineas.

Transferring to Australia, Warhorse produced numerous strong performances with placings in the G2 Apollo Stakes, LR Hawkesbury Mile and G3 Bill Richie Hcp.

Fast forward to the present – and on the eve of the 2015 stud season with no expectation of standing a new stallion, Mornington based Bombora Downs studmaster Christoph Bruechert has been presented with an opportunity normally reserved for the big boys in the game.

“If you had asked me what I wanted in a stallion I would have said, ‘A Group 1 winning 2YO that trained on, backed up with a solid pedigree’.

“Warhorse is far more than that,” Bruechert continued.  “He was a Champion NZ 2YO, a multiple Group winner including a Group 1 as a 2YO, he won from 1200m to 1400m and was Group placed out to a mile!  On top of a stellar 2YO career, Warhorse was a classic performed 3YO, a proven Group class weight-for-age performer and Group performed from 2- 5 years!

“I believe we may have got under the guard of some of the bigger players in the game with this horse.  To stand the best performed son of a leading sire is usually the realm of the Hunter Valley farms, it’s a big step up for us and a coup for Victoria!

“I’m fortunate to have the backing of the horse’s ownership group in standing Warhorse at a service fee accessible to most breeders, making him attractive value to sale-ring breeders and still within the reach of the breed to race market.”

Warhorse has an extremely appealing pedigree, by the outstanding General Nediym (73% winners / runners) and from the commercially hot Giant’s Causeway mare Rathlin Island.  The commercial appeal of this family is highlighted by some recent sales – a half-brother to Warhorse made $335,000 at the 2015 yearling sales while his half-sister sold at the recent broodmare sales for $410,000.

Warhorse’s pedigree is completely Danehill free and he’s from a family that is already proven to cross with the Danehill line, he’s a great looking individual with a neat strong build in the General Nediym mould, and is very correct.

While Warhorse was a Champion 2YO, he was no flash in the pan, racing at tjr elite company till his fifth year and retired sound, he’s a strong individual standing just shy of 16hh with a great temperament.

For those looking to breed tough precocious types, Warhorse is a great opportunity.  The best performed son of a top class sire is a proven recipe for success and for a first season sire it would be hard to find a better value prospect that delivers on performance, pedigree and physique than Warhorse.

Bombora Downs will stand Warhorse for a $7,700 service fee.
