Bonjoy Celebrations at Ascot

Alwyn Park stallion Maschino brought up another double at Ascot on Saturday when his black-type winner Bonjoy won again in the Celebration Of Life Day Trophy (1500m).

Bonjoy (5m Maschino – Amity Belle by Snitzel) went out a $3.60 favourite against class mares the calibre of Own The Queen (Awesome Rock) and Fast Flicker (A Lot) but they had no answer when Clint Johnston-Porter gave her full-bore in the straight.

It improved her record to 10 wins in 17 starts for earnings over $480,000.  That includes Westspeed Bonuses of $132,000 for a syndicate managed by trainer Jason Miller and his wife Sarah.

Bonjoy broke into black-type ranks winning the LR Starstruck Classic (1600m) on December 14 and Miller had her primed for a repeat performance on Saturday.  “She’s getting better and better and I had a bit of wiggle room with five weeks between runs,” he said.  “We brought her back in distance today and she’s been working well at home and on the beach.

“She was nice and fresh after we removed a foot abscess and was sound as a bell once it burst.  I rated her higher than Admiration Express (My Admiration) early on and she came out and ran second in the Group 1 (Northerly Stakes) last month.

“That makes me think Bonjoy can be a Group 1 Railway Stakes horse later this year.”

Bonjoy was bred and sold by Alwyn Park owner John Andrew for $60,000 at the 2021 Perth Magic Millions and she races in the Coral Park Stud colours of part-owners Glen & Kath Money who won numerous feature races in those silks with the progeny of their Champion Sire Beau Sovereign (NZ) in the 1970s and ‘80s.

“She has her tricks but was on her best behaviour today,” Johnston-Porter reported.  “She settled and was too good for them.  There’s plenty of scope and she has the potential to make the grade in a race like the Railway.”

Bonjoy is the first foal from Amity Belle (Snitzel) who is an unraced half-sister to 2017 LR Sheila Gwynne Classic (1400m) winner Dendee (Denman).  She has a 2yo colt and a colt on the ground by Maschino that were both bred by Coral Park.

Alwyn Park has 22 yearlings catalogued for the Perth Magic Millions and the first Maschino to parade is the colt from Morning Son (Bernardini) being offered as agent for De Grey Stud (Lot 93).  The dam won five races in Perth up to 2200m for Grant & Alana Williams.

He’s the first foal from Morning Son who is a half-sister to multiple Listed winner Devoted (Raconteur Stakes and Belmont Guineas).

Maschino (Encosta De Lago) sired Capricorn Man to win the first-leg of his Ascot double on Saturday and it followed a brace earlier this month with Ain’tsobad and Chino la Diva at Pinjarra.  His 3yo gelding North Face was the final TBWA Winner Of The Week in 2024 after a convincing Bunbury maiden victory on December 29.
