Bonjoy scored a last-to-first victory in the Quayclean Hcp (1200m) last Wednesday despite arriving at Belmont in a muck lather.
“When she came off the float, I thought she might have already run her race,” trainer Jason Miller conceded. “And I didn’t want her to have a gut-buster first-up with just the one trial under her belt.
“It was a 10 out of 10 ride by Clint (Johnston-Porter). He hooked her back from the wide barrier and then cut the corner on the home-turn. The cutaway has been off today but it’s still the shortest way home.”
Bonjoy won with ears-pricked from Imperialize (Patronize) and Climb On Top (Demerit) to send her earnings over $100,000. She was bred and sold by Alwyn Park for $60,000 at the 2021 Perth Magic Millions and descends from 1993 LR Burgess Queen Stakes winner Prayerful (Don’t Say Halo). Among the Stakes winners in her immediate family are G1 ATC Vinery Stud Stakes winner Montoya’s Secret (High Chaparral) and LR Sheila Gwynne Classic winner Dendee (Denman).
Bonjoy is the first foal from Amity Belle (Snitzel) and her second is Audio Boy (Sessions), an unraced 2yo with Adam Durrant for owner Geoff Bull. Her latest is a Maschino filly foaled last October.
Maschino (Encosta De Lago) stands at Alwyn Park for a $9,900 (inc GST) service fee and his filly filled out a treble for Serpentine-based studmaster John Andrew last Wednesday. Alwyn Park graduate Paris Calling (Ducimus) won the first-leg and former Alwyn Park resident Alfred Nobel (Ire) claimed the second-leg with Uncle Gerard.
Alfred Nobel (Danehill Dancer) subsequently relocated to Queensland and was pensioned by Coorooman Creek Farm owner Benny Crear last year. Now rising 17, Alfred Nobel’s final foal is a yearling colt from Hidden Joy (Hidden Dragon).
