Global Flirt gave bookmakers a going away present when he closed out Super Saturday with a $93 victory in the LR Tattersalls Cup (2100m).
The win earned the son of Mungrup Stud sire McFlirt another start in the Perth Cup (2400m) – he has finished 3rd and 6th in his last two attempts in the Group 2 feature on New Year’s Day.
Global Flirt (8g McFlirt – Majestic Belle by Metal Storm) was well-placed behind the leaders and burst through a gap in the straight to defeat Son Of Something (Blackfriars) and Kirov Boy (Zentsov Street) by a length.
Owner-trainer Justin Warwick won the last Perth Cup with Black Tycoon and he reckons Global Flirt will be thereabouts in Western Australia’s premier staying test. “He’s a good old horse and I’m glad to have him in stable. He will beat more than beats him in the Perth Cup.
“I thought he would be competitive today. He was well-beaten in the Ascot Gold Cup last time but there was a leader bias that day. I told Willie (White) to ride him like you’re home.”
Global Flirt was bred by Lex and Shirley Piper and he originally broke through at Listed level in the 2012 Towton Cup (2200m) at Ascot.
His dam Majestic Belle won four races around the Avon Valley circuit for the Pipers before retiring to Mungrup Stud. She has an unraced 3yo sister to the Tatts Cup winner named Majantic and a yearling colt by Hala Bek.
McFlirt (NZ), a stakes winning son of Kaapstad, was pensioned earlier this year after serving 13 books at Mungrup Stud.
