Trainer Jim Taylor is already looking ahead to the G1 Winterbottom Stakes with his star sprinter Barakey.
Barakey (5g Key Business – Dance Hi by Ideal Planet) maintained his perfect record with a brilliant first-up victory in the Perth Racing Festival Sprint (1000m) at Belmont on Saturday. “The Winterbottom will give us a good gauge on his chances over east next year,” Taylor said. “And being on home soil at Ascot gives us a bit of an advantage.”
Unbeaten in 9 starts, Barakey will start in the Colonel Reeves Stakes (1100m) on November 6 on the way to the $500,000 Winterbottom on November 24.
Taylor prepared Hay List to 8 wins from 9 starts before the Group 1 sprinter crossed the Nullabor in 2009.
Barakey’s sire Key Business is 22 and has been a mainstay of Rangeview Stud since covering his first mares at the Bullsbrook nursery in 1995. “He’s in remarkable condition and his fertility remains at a great level,” Rangeview’s Jody Gray said on Monday. “He has a smaller book this season including many of his old sweethearts.”
Key Business (Success Express) has an overall record of 205 winners of 706 races at a 52% strike-rate. There have been 13 stakes winners among that total – all of them in Western Australia.
There are more winners on the horizon going on trial results at Lark Hill on Monday morning.
Busimiss (2f Key Business – Danana Smoothie by Danetime) won a 950m hit-out by five lengths. She is an unraced member of Fred Kersley’s team and will sport the same colours as Northerly.
“She carries the Key Business – Danetime cross and it’s wonderful to see that working,” Jody Gray explained. “Our Danetime sire So Secret has his first crop ready to race this season and he has served numerous mares by Key Business.”
Il Vincero (3g Key Business – Time Is Money by Magic Of Money) was another impressive trial winner on Monday. He is also trained by Taylor and is an unraced brother to LR Bunbury Stakes winner Key to Money. Their dam is a half-sister to Barakey.
Key Business is standing for a $4,400 (inc gst) service fee this season.
