Zamorar became the first winner for Danzig sire Scandal Keeper on Sunday and he did it in style with a brilliant victory at Bendigo.

Scandal Keeper (USA) has been based at Yarradale Stud since 2008.  His first Westspeed bred progeny are new-season juveniles but there are a handful of three year-olds from a small book he covered before relocating to WA.

Zamorar (3g Scandal Keeper – Chloris by Scenic) had finished within a neck of star filly Hallowell Belle (Starcraft) on debut at Seymour on August 7.  Third home – six lengths away – was Romstar (Perfectly Ready) and he followed up with a win at Sale.

“Realistically, he was entitled to win like that,” trainer Butch Bourne said after Zamorar raced away to score by more than three lengths in the Taste Of Spring Raceday Maiden (1000m).

“He’s learning all the time and, I guess, we have two options now.  Hopefully, he can keep progressing and go through the classes.

“Then again, if the timing’s right, we could always go for a good race during the spring carnival.”

Bourne bought Zamorar as a foal for $18,000 at the 2009 Inglis Weanling Sale.  “He’s a nice type but doesn’t knock himself about at home.  You see the best of him on race day.”

Bourne knew he had ability and went over to Yarradale Stud’s yearling sale in May looking for another Scandal Keeper.  Yarradale owner Ron Sayers catalogued 20 from his first WA crop and they sold up to $75,000.

“They were pretty popular and I was under-bidder for the one I wanted,” Bourne recalled.  “I’ve kept in touch with Ron and his agent Grant Burns.  They knew I had a smart one by Scandal Keeper at home.  Fingers crossed, Zamorar gives us all a kick-along.”

Scandal Keeper (Danzig – Canny Miss by Marscay) was foaled in Kentucky and owns a pedigree that refuses to stand still.  He is a son of super-sire Danzig and his three-quarter sister Watchful is the dam of champion colt Sepoy.

Scandal Keeper was bred and raced by Sheikh Mohammed and he was a Newmarket 2YO winner from just three starts in 2005.

At a $4,400 (inc gst) service fee, Scandal Keeper is arguably the best value stallion based in Western Australia.
