Rangeview Stud sire Long Leaf made a mark nationwide with his first yearlings at the Perth Magic Millions in February and he has another four youngsters entered for the Perth Winter Sale this Sunday.
Long Leaf and his graduates created an immediate rapport with buyers at the Swan Valley. His yearlings averaged more than 13 times his 2020 service fee and that was highlighted by ANZ Bloodstock in its review of the Australian sale-season in April.
“It was amazing and the support was fantastic,” Rangeview Stud owner Robbie Gray said. “They’re big-bodied, muscular and precocious. He was a top-class 2yo and his second-crop foals are also looking just as good, if not better.”
Nevertheless, Gray has been around too long to get too carried away although watching Simon Miller, Grant Williams, Dan Morton, Colin Webster and Vern Brockman cotton on to his first crop was obviously very encouraging.
Lindsay Park’s Ben Hayes took a colt back east and so did Tony McEvoy. “They can’t be all wrong,” Gray reasoned. “Tony likes the way his colt is developing and Jesse Byrne also gave me the thumbs up after breaking in a few.”
Byrne is based in the south-west at Stratham and Gray sent him the Long Leaf half-sister to G2 Karrakatta Plate winner Hobart Jones. “I thought she would help promote him and sell for a good quid at the Magic Millions but she didn’t make reserve so we brought her back home.”
Gray and his wife Jody kept the leggy filly and she has been named Penny Royal. They’ve also kept Long Leaf’s service fee at $5,500 (inc GST) and that’s value-plus for stallion who could well be our go-to sire this time next year.
Rangeview’s yearling filly from Oorah (War Chant) has been catalogued as Lot 43 this Sunday. She is being sold (as agent) for Glenrowan Thoroughbreds and is the first foal from the mare who is a four-time winning daughter of Street Value (LR Bunbury Cup).
Alwyn Park has a Long Leaf – Melteme filly (Lot 37) as agent for De Grey Park and Blackwatch Stud owner Steve Wallace offers a Long Leaf – Mimala May filly (Lot 39) and Long Leaf – Sublimation colt (Lot 58).
The Blackwatch colt is from a three-quarter-sister to the dam of G1 Railway Stakes winner Trix Of The Trade (Trade Fair).
