Calypso Bay (NZ) endorsed the decision by Mackay trainer John Manzelmann to send him south with a longshot victory at Doomben on Saturday.

The High Chaparral gelding arrived in town as an $80 outsider but flouted that quote in the TAB Hcp (2200m). He flew home late to beat Harper’s Choice (Street Cry) by a neck with a length to Exoteric (Champs Elysees).

Manzelmann is noted for travelling horses, however, he rarely comes to Brisbane. “I brought Baker’s Dozen down for the Highway Plate and decided I might as well send a few more to fill the float.”

Calypso Bay had won the Deagon Cup four runs back for south-east trainer Darryl Ward prior to a move north. He ran fifth in the Townsville Cup last month and Manzelmann elected to send the gelding south instead of going even further north for the Cairns Cup which was also run on Saturday.

“This race suited him a lot better and it has paid off,” Manzelmann said. “His form wasn’t that bad but obviously not many others agreed.”

Astute Bloodstock (FBAA) agent Louis Le Metayer originally bought Calypso Bay on behalf of leading owners Ron & Judy Wanless for $550,000 at the 2014 NZB National Yearling Sale. Trainer Kris Lees prepped him for wins at Wyong, Taree and Canterbury before a move to the Sunshine State.

High Chaparral sired him from G2 Eight Carat Classic winner Alagant Satin (Al Akbar).
