Canford Cliffs replaces Churchill Downs at Blue Gum Farm

Incoming shuttler Canford Cliffs heads the roster at Victorian based Blue Gum Farm for 2012.

Canford Cliffs (Tagula) built an outstanding record winning five straight Group 1 events in his three and four-year-old seasons.  He defeated the likes of Rip Van Winkle and Goldikova in races such as the Irish 2000 Guineas, St James’s Palace Stakes and Queen Anne Stakes.

Injury ended his career after finishing second to Frankel when attempting to defend his G1 Sussex Stakes title in July last year.  Now serving his first northern book at Coolmore Stud in Ireland, he will shuttle to Blue Gum for a $19,250 fee.

Blue Gum lost stud stalwart Umatilla last October.  The Miswaki stallion was 23 years-old had been pensioned from active stud duties in 2009.

Blue Gum owner Phil Campbell also announced Churchill Downs has been sold.  A son of Danehill, he covered some 541 mares in five seasons at stud and, although the early signs were very promising, none of his first-crop winners have earned black type.
