Arrowfield sire Not A Single Doubt missed out on a Group 1 when Squamosa was just beaten in the Golden Rose on Saturday but he bounced back with a very promising winner in South Africa on Tuesday.

Castlethorpe (3c  Not A Single Doubt – Park Heiress by Sadler’s Wells) started a $1.50 favourite in the UK Soccer Maiden Plate (1450m) at Clairwood yesterday and was always travelling like a winner for Anton Marcus.  He reeled in the tearaway leader Beaches in the straight to score by 1.5 lengths at his third start.

Castlethorpe was a $50,000 buy for trainer Mike Bass from the Blue Gum Farm draft at the 2009 Inglis Melbourne Premier yearling sale.  He did well on debut when fifth to Draconian at Clairwood and was well supported to win second-up over the same course and distance but unfortunately bumped into above-average NZ bred colt Galileo’s Destiny (Galileo).

Castlethorpe is owned by Bass, Lionel Cohen and Robert Bloomberg and is named after a village in Milton Keynes in England.   His dam Park Heiress is a three-quarter sister to G1 Irish Derby winner New Approach (Galileo) who stands at Darley’s Victorian base at Northwood Park.

Park Heiress had foaled winners by Mujtahid, Sunday Silence, Unbridled’s Song, End Sweep and Dehere (2) before Castlethorpe.  She also has a 2YO colt by Elvstroem and a yearling filly by Haradasun.

Not A Single Doubt has now sired 64 winners of 118 races at a 58% strike-rate.  He stands alongside his own sire Redoute’s Choice at Arrowfield and is available at a $13,750 (inc gst) service fee this year.

Meanwhile, Squamosa will be spelled after being nailed by Toorak Toff in the G1 Golden Rose last Saturday.  Trainer Gai Waterhouse was thrilled with the effort.  “If he draws an alley he wins,” Waterhouse claimed.  “He was having his first preparation and he had to do all the work.  I’ll set him for the Newmarket.”
