Champion mares queue for Frankel

Frankel’s first book at Banstead Manor Stud includes numerous Group 1 winners and topping the list are champion mares Midday, Danedream and Alexander Goldrun.

A select book of 130 mares will await the Juddmonte superstar when he starts covering at a fee of 125,000 pounds from February 15.  Other high-profile names include Breeders’ Cup winner Zagora who recently changed hands for $2.50 million to Mandore International at the Fasig-Tipton November Sale in Kentucky, Japanese champion Vodka and 2011 Kentucky Broodmare of the Year Oatsee.

“We will restrict the number of mares he covers,” Banstead Manor general manager Philip Mitchell said.  “This is an exclusive horse and we want to keep him exclusive.

“We don’t want a situation where a large number of his progeny are being sold.  We won’t be flooding the market and will aim to get the right balance between owner-breeders and commercial breeders.”

Juddmonte mares already pencilled in include 2010 Broodmare of the Year Binche, Dansili’s G1 winning half-sister Heat Haze and Clepsydra, dam of the G1 winning fillies Passage Of Time and Timepiece.  Midday and her dam Midsummer will also be among his book.

“It’s still early days with the matings for next year but Frankel will be getting first pick,” Mitchell explained.  “We want to give Frankel every opportunity at stud and we will be supporting him as much as possible.  But it is very difficult – we’re spoiled at the moment because we also stand Dansili and Oasis Dream and we can’t ignore them.

“Statistics tell us that only one in nine stallions are successful but, having said that, not every horse will have the calibre of mare that Frankel will cover.”
