Cheeky Tart notched the narrowest of victories to move her sire Edenwold off the mark at Oamaru on Sunday.
Cheeky Tart (2f Edenwold – Masterkova by Hereward the Wake) nailed the Speight’s Hcp (1200m) by a nose and a nose at her second appearance in public. She had been unlucky when midfield on debut at Waimate last month.
The Timaru based filly claimed Dragon’s Glory (Woodbury Lad) a couple of strides from the line on Oamaru Cup day and then held off quick closer Top Star (Fast ‘n’ Famous). She is part-owned and trained by David Hutton who bought her as a foal for just $1,000 at the Selwyn River Stud dispersal in March 2010.
Edenwold (Can) initially stood with Glyn Morris at Selwyn River in Christchurch and subsequently transferred to nearby Berkley Stud where he is based alongside Coat’s Choice (Redoute’s Choice).
Edenwold (Southern Halo) was Canada’s 2005 Champion 2YO winning the Simcoe Stakes (1400m), Vandal Stakes (1200m) and Colin Stakes (1200m). In his classic year, Edenwold returned to win the prestigious Queen’s Plate (2000m) which is the oldest continuously run race in North America.
Former Champion New Zealand sire Sound Reason had also parlayed the Champion Canadian 2YO award to complete the Queen’s Plate double in 1988.
Edenwold is a masculine individual and, like More Than Ready, is by Southern Halo out of a Mr. Prospector line mare. His younger sister to Cheeky Tart was an $8,000 buy for Paul Moroney at the 2012 NZ Bloodstock Festival Sale.
