Group 1 stallion Chinese Dragon (USA) has been signed to stand at Allandale Park Thoroughbreds in NSW.
Chinese Dragon (Stravinsky) was bred by Ben Sangster and raced in Coolmore Stud’s colours to win an August 2YO Maiden at the Curragh.
Transferred to North America as a three year-old, he developed into a top-class sprinter-miler winning four black-type races topped by the Sir Beaufort Stakes at Santa Anita. At four, he was G1 placed in the Frank Kilroe Hcp and G2 Arcadia Stakes.
Making his first start in over twelve months as a five year-old, he captured the G2 San Francisco Mile on turf at Golden Gate Fields. “He tried to pull up when he got in front,” trainer Bob Hess said. “He likes to play cat-and-mouse with other horses.
“He has presence and he has charisma. He’s cool and knows it. We’re looking at the Breeders’ Cup Mile now.”
The San Francisco Mile was Chinese Dragon’s penultimate start. He was injured next time out in the G1 Shoemaker Mile at Hollywood Park and retired to stud in New Zealand.
Chinese Dragon’s first yearlings sold to $80,000 at Karaka and among them was the Trentham stakes winner Serpent.
Allandale Park studmaster John Todd and his daughter Claire operate in high country near Bathurst and the roster also includes Assafa (Danehill), Diogenes (Marscay), Barbajuan (Danehill Dancer) and Carry the Crown (Vice Regent).
Chinese Dragon will stand his first Australian season for a $4,400 (inc gst) service fee.
