Big Brown’s Kentucky-bred winners are spread far and wide. Apart from top-class USA based colts Brown Almighty and Darwin, the Vinery shuttler’s first crop also includes a classic candidate in Sweden.
Sanador (2c Big Brown – Sugar Plum S.J.R. by Point Given) broke his maiden over 1200m at Jagersro on Sunday. The Ole Larsen trained colt was fastest from the start and duelled with Margaux down the straight. He responded under rider Espen Ski to eventually win by a nose.
“This is an exciting horse and we’re dreaming of the Derby next year,” Larsen said. “There hasn’t been a home-trained horse win the Derby for the last few years so it’s high time that it happened again.”
Larsen has won the Swedish Derby three times as a rider and once as a trainer.
Sanador (USA) is the 11th individual winner by Big Brown who won the 2008 Kentucky Derby – Preakness Stakes double. Other high-profile stallions with winners at the Jagersro meeting on Sunday included Giant’s Causeway, Awesome Again, Selkirk and Motivator.
Bred by LifeLong Farm and the Big Brown Syndicate, Sanador was initially sold for $15,000 as a foal at the 2010 Keeneland November Sale. Sent to Ireland, he made 42,000 euros at the 2011 Goffs Orby yearling sale.
Sanador’s dam Sugar Plum S.J.R. is an unraced half-sister to G3 Laurel Futurity winner Scottish Halo (Jolie’s Halo). His older half-brother Book Of Numbers (More Than Ready) won six races in Ireland for leading owner-trainer Jim Bolger.
Big Brown shuttled to Vinery in 2010 and 2011 but was given a year off this year after lacerating a hind leg in July.
