Clockwise Classic a first for Hinchinbrook

The Gai Waterhouse trained filly Carriages has given Yarraman Park’s Hinchinbrook his first winner in the Magic Millions Clockwise 2YO Classic (1000m) at Ballarat.

Carriages (2f Hinchinbrook – Simply Enchanting by Forest Wildcat) went straight to the lead and fought back strongly when challenged half-way down the straight.  She found another kick under Craig Williams for a two length victory over Prompt Return (Beneteau) and Moral Outrage (Stratum).

The Sydney visitor had been placed at Randwick on debut earlier this month and Williams said the experience with the right-hand way of going aided her victory on Saturday.  “She stepped fast and made the most of going right-handed,” Williams said.  “I thought we were in trouble when the favourite was so close – it’s a stiff five furlongs – but she’s a smart filly and drew away again.”

Carriages cost $110,000 at the 2014 Magic Millions and part-owner Dave Henderson said the filly will be set for the $2 million Gold Coast 2YO Classic in January.  She is from a USA bred daughter of G2 Belmont Prioress Stakes winner Sapphire N’ Silk (Pleasant Tap).

Hinchinbrook (Fastnet Rock) had earned his first black-type when Old Trieste was Group 3 placed in the Maribyrnong Plate on the last day of the Flemington carnival.  He finished fourth in the Clockwise Classic.

A Group 3 winner of the 2010 Skyline Stakes, Hinchinbrook is a three-quarter brother to Snitzel and covered 119 mares in his initial book.  Yarraman Park stands him for a $16,500 (inc gst) fee.
