Colossus clinches Brisbane Contract

Red Colossus will winter in Brisbane after winning the G3 Victoria Handicap at Caulfield on Easter Saturday.

The Testa Rossa gelding will be set for the G1 Doomben Cup (2020m) on May 21 and the G2 Brisbane Cup (2400m) on June 11.

Red Colossus (4g Testa Rossa – Palace Glow by Palace Music) performed at Group 1 level in the southern states last year and trainer Greg Eurell believes there’s definitely a good race in him.  He was narrowly beaten by Kidnapped in the South Australian Derby and he also finished fifth to So You Think in the Mackinnon Stakes

“He is the right product to take away,” Eurell said.  “He handles the wet tracks so going to Queensland won’t be a problem.”

Red Colossus is raced in partnership by David Moodie and Nick Psaltis.  He was a Listed winner of the Port Adelaide Guineas and SA Chairman’s Stakes leading up to the 2010 South Australian Derby.

The Contract Racing gelding is nothing like his older half-sister Nediym’s Glow (General Nediym).  She was a flying machine winning the G3 VRC Thoroughbred Breeders Stakes and MRC Blue Diamond Prelude.

The stamina in the bottom half of his pedigree comes from second-dam Starlit Queen (Sir Tristram) who is a sister to G1 NZ Oaks winner (Our) Starline.

Red Colossus is one of 32 stakes winners for Testa Rossa.  The Vinery sire has 365 individual winners to his credit and they have won 1041 races worldwide at a remarkable 71% strike-rate.

“We haven’t seen the best of Red Colossus yet,” Eurell predicted.  “It was a super effort to win over 1400m on Saturday and Brisbane will be a perfect lead-in to the Melbourne spring carnival.”
