Colts create Marine One Monopoly

The odds of it happening are astronomical, nevertheless, Mogumber Park reports the first 13 foals by Marine One born on the farm this spring are all colts!

Do the math and the chances are 8,192 to 1.

Marine One (Capitalist) won a Group 2 Rubiton Stakes (1100m) at Caulfield and covered upwards of 60 mares in his first book for Mogumber Park owners Colin Brown and Fiona Lacey.  The Bullsbrook couple stand him in association with the Hunter Valley’s Kingstar Farm and China Horse Club.

“There are some fillies around but the overwhelming majority are colts,” Brown said on Friday.  “And they are looking fantastic.  The first half-dozen born here weighed between 52kgs and 60kgs and they’re just like their Dad – strong with good bone and great conformation.”

WA breeders and their mares with Marine One colts include Woodbridge Thoroughbreds / Calianco (California Dane), Gold Front / Prue (Slater) and Marielle Park / Quality Spirit (Elusive Quality).  The first Kingstar Farm colts are from NZ-bred Faraway Eyes (Ustinov) and Kistos (Pierro).

The Australian Stud Book’s latest pedigree page update shows the only first-crop Marine One fillies are from Amelia Park mare Let’s Cut Loose (Exceed And Excel) and the Wally Daly pair Tahitian Pearl (Toronado) and Winning Pia (Shooting To Win).

Marine One stands with Champion WA 2YO Sire Safeguard (Exceed And Excel) who is on fire with multiple Saturday city winners leading a list of 7 individual winners in the last three weeks.  And his latest 2yo crop are due to debut including last month’s Belmont trial winner Swift Fix who is a Loloma Farms homebred gelding with trainer Dion Luciani.

Mogumber Park has implemented a cost-effective deal for broodmare owners supporting its resident stallions this season.  Breeders booking into Marine One at $8,800 (inc GST) will receive another service at no extra charge to Safeguard who is advertised at a $4,400 (inc GST) fee.

The two-for-one price is a win-to-nothing considering Safeguard’s Book 1 yearlings have averaged $120,000 over the last three Magic Millions Sales in Perth.  “He has done a remarkable job from relatively small books with metrics like 68% winners to runners and 13% stakes-performers to winners,” Brown continued.

“He has a loyal and growing band of supporters but I’ve wondered what he could do with a book of 80 plus mares, hence the two-for-one initiative this year.”
