Coolmore Stakes Highlight for Shrapnel

Highgrove Stud owner Ron Gilbert was at Flemington for the 2008 Victoria Derby meeting but he took time out to watch his homebred colt Wanted win on debut at Rosehill.

Wanted (4r Fastnet Rock – Fragmentation by Snippets) went to win the G1 Newmarket Hcp at Flemington earlier this year and is now covering his first book at Eliza Park Stud.

Gilbert will be back at Flemington tomorrow to see Wanted’s younger half brother Shrapnel run in the G1 Coolmore Stakes on the Derby day support card.

Shrapnel (3c Charge Forward – Fragmentation by Snippets) defeated star filly Yosei in the G3 Marsh Breeders’ Stakes at Morphettville in February and he returned this season to score a smart victory at Moonee Valley last month.

A victory in the Group 1 will be a triumph for Gilbert on many fronts.   He is not only the breeder but is also a part owner of Shrapnel and he has a share in Charge Forward who stands at Arrowfield Stud.

Charge Forward sired the 2009 Coolmore Stakes winner when his filly Headway charged home to defeat King Pulse by a nose.

The other winning angle for Gilbert in this year’s renewal of the Coolmore Stakes is his Fastnet Rock – Fragmentation yearling colt back home at Highgrove.  The youngster has been catalogued for the 2011 Inglis Easter yearling sale.

Among Shrapnel’s main Coolmore Stakes rivals is Star Witness who is from the first crop of fellow Arrowfield sire Starcraft.  He was a G1 winner of the MRC Blue Diamond Stakes and a second elite victory will boost the value of his Bernadini half brother that’s been catalogued for the 2011 Easter Sale by Ken Turner’s Almavale Bloodstock.
