Lee Freedman has sent well-bred fillies Chinchilla and Ludka to Tasmania for the opening day of the Summer Racing Carnival at Tattersall’s Park in Hobart on Sunday. Both fillies are raced by Sheikh Mohammed and have already arrived at the Brighton training complex where they are stabled with Gary White.
Chinchilla (2f Exceed And Excel – Chestnut Star by Eternity Range) will be one of the favourites for the Listed Elwick Stakes with Craig Newitt aboard. She finished fourth in the Listed Debutants Stakes at Caulfield in October and returned from a break to win a Seymour maiden on January 6.
Chinchilla was catalogued but withdrawn from the 2009 Magic Millions National weanling sale by Rothwell Park. She is a sister to Exceed And Excel’s Perth winner Excellar and their dam Chestnut Star is an unraced half-sister to Brisbane G3 winner Jar Jar Binks (Danehill Dancer).
Stablemate Ludka will line up in the Listed Hobart Guineas (2100m) and will be partnered by local rider Stephen Maskiell. She is gunning for a hat-trick on the back of victories at Stony Creek and Mornington.
Ludka (3f Singspiel – Laleta by Danehill) was conceived in England to southern hemisphere time and her dam was then exported to Australia in March 2007. Laleta was sent to New Zealand the following year but failed to get in foal to Zabeel.
Second dam Lailati (Mr. Prospector) is half-sister to Swettenham Stud sire Keep The Faith. His son Socks was a Listed winner of the Tasmanian Guineas earlier this month.
Ludka’s sire Singspiel stood a one-off Australian season in 2001 and that crop included Tasmanian stakes winner Colonel Parker.
