Top End sprinter Canali completed another winning afternoon for Darley sire Exceed And Excel with a brilliant front running display in the Listed Summer Scorcher at Ascot on Saturday.
Canali (4g Exceed And Excel – Angora by Barathea) is the sixth individual southern hemisphere stakes performer this season for Exceed And Excel joining Reward For Effort, Curtana, Valoura, Internal Revenue and Exceedingly Regal.
Earlier on New Year’s Day, Exceed And Excel colt Covered In Class staked his claim for the G1 Blue Diamond Stakes with a sensational debut win at Mornington. He is trained by Peter Moody who won the 2009 Blue Diamond with Reward For Effort.
Canali is trained in Darwin by Stephen Brown and he arrived in Perth after winning twice at Fannie Bay. The widely-travelled gelding started his career with Bart Cummings at Randwick but didn’t break the ice until a transfer to Adelaide twelve months ago.
“He is a pretty smart horse who likes the 1000 metres,” Brown said at Ascot.. “And he appreciated racing on grass again.”
Canali was bred by Bart and is a son of his stakes placed Rosehill winner Angora. At stud, she has also foaled the Cummings trained filly Dreamcoat (God’s Own) who was placed behind classy youngsters Beneteau and Georgette Silk last year.
Angora’s 2yo is a filly by Al Maher and she has a yearling colt and a weanling colt by God’s Own.
Exceed And Excel has now sired 28 stakes winners among 316 individual winners worldwide. He has 12 yearlings catalogued for the Gold Coast Magic Millions yearling sale highlighted by Lot 339, a colt from champion sprinter Miss Andretti being offered by Toolooganvale Farm.
