Day 1 Keeneland November Sale – Plum buy for Pope

Last year’s Kentucky Oaks winner Plum Pretty brought a final bid of $4.20 million to top Day 1 of Keeneland’s November Sale on Tuesday.

Plum Pretty (4f Medaglia d’Oro – Liszy by A.P. Indy) was purchased by Mandy Pope’s Whisper Hill Farm.  The same buyer paid $10 million for USA Horse of the Year Havre de Grace at the Fasig-Tipton November Sale on Monday night.

“We are upgrading our broodmare band and making some big adjustments in the quality,” Pope said.  “Plum Pretty is well balanced and has a lot of size to her.  Hopefully, that will transform into the next generation of babies.”

Plum Pretty was one of five millionaires to change hands on Tuesday.  Harmonious (Dynaformer) made $2.80 million to the bid of Mandore Agency.  She was a G1 winner of the 2010 American Oaks and Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup.

Shadai Stud director Katsumi Yoshida paid $2.10 million for champion grey mare Zazu (Tapit).  She was sold by Zenyatta’s owners Jerry and Ann Moss after a career that included G1 triumphs in the Lady’s Secret Stakes and Las Virgenes Stakes.

Mandore agent Nicolas de Watrigant also paid $1.60 million for G1 winner Shotgun Gulch (Thunder Gulch) in foal to Bernardini.  He weighed in a third time with another $1.25 million for Canadian champion Negligee (Northern Afleet) who was offered in foal to Distorted Humor.

de Watrigant has been active in Europe this year on behalf of Qatar Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani.

Keeneland reported 100 horses sold for $27.66 million at an average of $276,650 on Day 1.  Comparisons with 2011 are moot as last year’s opening session included the dispersal of the late Edward P. Evans which generated turnover of $63 million.

The 11-day Keeneland November Sale continues on Wednesday and runs through to November 16.  Full results can be viewed at:  www.keeneland.com
